Illustration Friday: "Muddy"

Well, this week's prompt on IF was "Muddy". I got pretty muddied up figureing out what to illustrate. At first it was Muddy Waters the muso, but I realised that I'd just be doing a three d copy of someone else's photograph; and then I was tempted to try the easy way out: a road going into a town called "Muddy Waters, Pop: 2300"; then someone silly looking pulling a face while drinking a glass of muddy water. Finally I came up with this one. Hope you like it! Please click for bigger. Cheers.

  1. This is cool, Andrew. He kind of looks like a young version of you :-) I really like the surrealism in your picture. And the colors, the great gold and purple-contrast on the fish.

  7. I like this image. It is very mysterious. What are the figures doing? Are they statues from a town that has long been flooded? Or are they the male equivalent of mermaids (not sure what the term is)? I like the colors and repetition.

  8. Hey Andrew I was going to do Muddy Waters too! Then I came to the exact conclusion that you did - I was really hesitant to do Cosmo as I knew there were going to be so many dogs, kids, & muddy pigs, but I always need new illos of him anyway! Bravo to you for coming up with something so unique. I love this underwater fantasy - sort of reminds me of a much more sophisticated version of those old underwater Hollywood musicals! Love the colors and the bubbles, what a show!

  9. Ho! Thanks very much for all the kind words. :) Pity there are no smilie faces here or I would wear them out.

About the figure hmmm. I guess it could be me about a hundred years ago..... Originally I had him sitting on a fish in a jar of muddy water, the whole lot suspended above the clean blue ocean. There's was lots of refration and weird reflections and it was fun but ambiguous, and the contrast between 'clean' and muddy' wasn't working viusally at all.

So I broke the jar of muddy water and dropped him into the ocean, added some birds and dirt and luckily it looked much better (I hope)

    Thanks again!

    Cheers
